In February of 2011, Police Officer Jonathan Esquivel was assigned to the traffic division of the San Antonio Police Department. One of his first duties was to secure the scene of a crash on Loop 410 by Summit Parkway. An easy task for a police officer with 6 years of experience turned tragic.
Esquivel noticed a pick-up truck speeding towards him while he was placing flares and traffic cones around the car accident. The pick-up was trying to exit the highway when it collided with Esquivel. The officer was thrown onto the grassy median. He suffered major brain damage and was in a coma for days at University Hospital.
Now, almost a year after the accident, Esquivel was honored for his miraculous recovery on January 9th. Early estimations about his improvement were bleak to say the least. On the same day, Esquivel heard of the man who caused him such misery was charged for his crimes. Shad Christopher Modesett was the driver of the pick-up which hit Esquivel. He looked away from the road while texting on his cell phone and had to swerve to avoid hitting some vehicles. But he did hit police officer Esquivel due to his inattention. He was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and arrested on December 18th of 2012.
Esquivel is still not able to go back to work as a police officer and has nearly a year of rehab left to complete.
